Two interesting artists will be showcased tonight. Sandy Schimmel uses colorful urban elements such as restaurant menus and gallery show cards as tiles in her mosaics of people. Joshua Stone stitches together graffiti with blocks of images for complex and detailed compositions. The gallery is also thinking of your nourishment needs by providing dinner coupons (20% off) to Santa Fe Tequila Company up the street.

"Unveiling of artworks by Texas artist Joshua Stone who, after years of embellishing Dallas' exterior surfaces - he spent much of his youth as a graffiti artist - now creates more, ahem, traditional works, such as "The Bourgeois Diagnostic" exhibition of sewn-together storybook cutouts and graffiti-stylepainted designs."

Art Monday - Joshua Stone
Released:
04/21/2008

"In his youth, Stone spent well over a decade painting street graffiti and commissioned murals with other top artists of the genre.

This passion for public art led him to study fine art and graphic design at Oklahoma State University. For the past decade, he has worked for some of the top ad agencies and web design shops in the southwest, building brands for numerous fortune 100 companies, including American Airlines, AT&T, Blockbuster, Expedia, Motorola, Nokia, Pepsi and SONY.

Stone transitioned to producing fine art full-time in 2006. He will often paint under the name "WAVE", his former graffiti 'tag' or signature.

"I enjoy creating pieces that work on different levels. I want the viewer's experience to change when a piece is seen up close, and as they gradually step back. I'm combining graffiti elements with blocks of images, and like the randomness that the string overlay creates. This provides coexisting complexity of detail and simplicity of composition."

Street Cred

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Unless, of course, your name is Joshua Stone and your tools include a sewing machine and a can of paint.

The artist combines collage and aerosol art, using cut, torn, snipped, and sliced pieces of printed paper reassembled with enamel, acrylic, and thread to create unique works. His style, which evolved from a youth spent painting street graffiti and murals, is influenced by typography and architecture and aims to be both familiar and cryptic.

Finishing touch: Each piece is mounted in an antique Baroque frame that’s been spray painted and lacquered. The result is one perfectly put-together painting that’s bound to stand the test of time.

Just read the writing on the wall.
